Our birth story of little Willa

On February 15th, at 3:11 am we welcomed our little miracle girl Willa Lee. She weighed 6lbs 13oz and was 19.5 inches long. Here is our story of how we welcomed our little girl into the world, so lets back track to the days leading up to her arrival.

February 13th, 2018

I had a DR appointment a few days ago confirming that I was still not dilated. She was in perfect position - head down but still high up. Today I decided I was on a mission to hopefully kick start my labor. I was 3 days away from my due date and the anticipation of meeting her was killing me. I did not want to go over my due date. I decided to take Sampson on a walk to Big Lots, which is about 2.5 miles away from my house and then have Gregg pick me up. We walked and it felt good to get up and out of the house. Still not sign of labor - I was feeling good. I then went home and took my usual afternoon nap.
Later that night Gregg and I were debating what to get for dinner. This is a nightly debate because he has amazing self control and eats so healthy- me on the other hand likes to eat whatever. Well, that night I saw Papa Johns was doing the cute heart shaped pizzas for Valentines day. So obviously I was like ok cute I want a heart shaped pizza plus it would make a cute instagram post for tomorrow. (obviously that post never got posted haha) So I ordered my usual- pepperoni, pineapples and jalapeños. This time though extra jalapeños to try and get this baby out of me.

February 14th, 2018

3:00 am
I wake up and go pee, you know usual waking up all the time when pregnant to relieve yourself. Had a hard time to go back to sleep, so I just laid in bed.

4:30 am
I all of a sudden feel a very little gush of water. I think to myself- "I just went pee not too long ago there is no way I just peed the bed." I lay there look at the clock and think " ok well Greggs alarm will be going off at 5, I'm not going to wake him up to tell him. He's just going to think I'm lying since I was on a mission yesterday to get this labor going."

5:00 am
Greggs alarm goes off. He rolls our of bed starts to brush his teeth. I'm still laying in bed, a little nervous to get up because of that little gush. Gregg finished brushing his teeth and I look at him and say "I think my water broke about 30 mins ago." He's still in a sleepy haze trying to process what I said. I finally get up and WHOA another gush. I look at him and say "Yep, I'm like 90% sure this is my water breaking." I run over to the restroom and I know this might be TMI, but I had zero control of the fluid flowing out of my body. It was clear liquid along with spotting, so I knew no matter what we had to go to the hospital because the spotting was definitely scary me.

5:30 am
I decide to jump in the shower and get ready. At this point we were very calm. This is exactly how I wanted my labor to start. I didn't want to be in a rush or freak out once I felt like I was in labor. I wasn't in any pain - contractions haven't really started. I was just leaking all over that was my only sign.  We packed up the car and got on the road shortly after.

7:00 am- 11:00 am
We arrive at the hospital. They didn't have a labor and delivery room available yet so they checked us into another room. I got undressed, put on the lovely hospital gown and they started  to hook me up to the heart rate matching and contraction monitor to watch baby. They then took a little test (sorta like a pregnancy test) to check and make sure my water broke. The test usually takes up to 20 mins to show results- mine showed the results within a few minutes. My water for sure was broken. They then checked to see if I was dilated. Basically the nurse sticks her hand up there and says " Well you're dialed to 1cm now." Basically she helped me get to a one. At this point I was bummed. I was hoping I was dilated a little more then that, but nope.
They then continue to check me over the next few hours. Contractions are still not consistent and I'm not dilating anymore. They then talk to me about inducing me once a labor and delivery room comes available. So they tell me to eat whatever I want before they start me on pitocin. Pitocin is a drug to help kick start your contractions and dilate you to make labor progress. I can not stress to you enough to EAT when they tell you. I was so hyped up I wasn't that hungry, but you will be so EAT!

11:00 am- 9:30 pm ish
Finally a labor and delivery room is available. We get settled in and they start the IV drip of pitocin. I thought this was going to be a fast process once they started the drip, but nope. Hours and hours went by. Contractions were coming and going, but still not consistent or that intense. Around 6pm I dilated to 4 cm. At the point I was happy something was happening FINALLY! I was having a lot of back labor. So a lot of my pain was in my back. I tried to sit on a labor ball to relive that pressure, but baby girl did not like it when I was in that position so I had to stop. She started to get stressed out and her heart rate would go crazy. So I had to lay in bed on my left side. She didn't like my right side. Contractions started to get more intense and I had horrible heartburn. At one point I threw up because the heartburn was so bad. Damn eating that jalapeño pizza.
By about 9:00 pm I think thats when I was dilated to 6cm and contractions were way more intense. I started to loose control of my body and the shaking started. Nurses came in and told be that the baby was still stressed out and that they wanted to try and add fluid back into my uterus to see if that helped calm her down. So at about 9:30 they added fluid back into my uterus and I started to feel a lot of pressure and the contractions were way more intense and happening more consistently.

10:30 ish pm

I decided it was finally time to get the epidural. I was in a lot of pain and couldn't take it anymore. Shaking was still happening and I just felt like i didn't have any control and was very tense. Once they gave me the epidural I felt so much better. First off- the epidural doesn't even hurt. You feel pressure, but at this point all you're thinking about it how intense your contractions are.

11:00 -12:00 ish pm

Family members come back in room, but I quickly send them out because I wanted to relax and get ready to do the damn thing. I only wanted Gregg in the room with me when we started to push. I threw up again sometime after the epidural. Im telling you the heartburn was so bad. They gave me something in my IV drip to help, but it didn't.  Then they had me drink they awful tasting liquid and that seemed to sorta help.

February 15th, 2018
1:00 am-3:11 am

At this point the time is a big blur. I felt like shortly after the epidural kicked in my body relaxed. It was great because I would watch the monitor and see the contractions happening but only feel it a little bit. The pressure was higher up sort of closer to my rib cage, but I was feeling good. Finally, I felt like I could push. I felt so much pressure. The nurse looked at me and was like theres no way you were just at a 6. I was like I think you need to check me again because I feel like baby is coming out. She checked me again and I was 10cm if not more lol. She was like oh yeah this baby is coming. She had me do a push for her. She wanted to see how well I pushed. Well I pushed and she told me to stop. She said oh I think this baby is going to come quick. (well quick finally after almost a 24 hour labor haha) The nurses came in and had me start pushing. Baby girl was still under some stress, so I had to push by laying on my left side. They have you push for 10 seconds 3 times with each contraction. So I did that about three times. The DR came in and said that the baby was under some stress and that they might need to vacuum her out if she doesn't move down more. C-section was a last resort the Dr said. Gregg was amazing during the labor. He cheered me on and kept telling me to push harder. It was weird because during the whole laboring, his voice was the only one I could hear. I'm pretty sure I squeezed the shit out of his hand the whole time.
Once the Dr told me they might have to vacuum her out I was like no way that is happening. I am going to do this. That gave me the motivation I needed. I pushed again (the 3-10 second round with the contraction) Finally, the Dr said to give her one more slow push. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck, which is why she was under so much stress in certain positions. So I slowly pushed and they got the cord unwrapped around her neck. Then I did a few more slow pushes ( to help not to tear as much) Then she was here at 3:11 am of pure deliciousness.
I did tear a little bit (only three stitches worth, but don't worry you don't feel a thing. While the Dr stitched me up I was holding and doing skin to skin with our little Willa. You don't even notice or realize what is going on down below. After an almost 24 hour labor she was here and all the pain was worth it. She came out with the most perfect head. I'm so glad we didn't have to vacuum it out. Holding her for the first time was the most surreal feeling. I couldn't believe she was here. She was real. We did it. We created the most perfect little human, and at this moment our hearts were stolen.
